3d printed bacterial colony

Here is one of Diarmuid Lloyd’s 3d bacterial colonies. First a colony was scanned using the SPIM microscope build by Johen Arlt. Diarmuid then processed the resulting 3d image to construct a model suitable for our 3d printer. The model is about 300x larger than the actual colony.

I am not sure what the use of this 3d model could be – but it looks cool!
